Holland Grove House, located at 123 Fitzroy Street, was
named for Samuel Holland, Surveyor General of Canada. He
acquired the land, lot 28, that was referred to as Holland
Grove, by way of lottery in London in 1767. The original
house, called Holland House, built for Samuel Holland’s
family in the 18th century was within this lot but the house
that exists at 123 Fitzroy Street today was built by William
Brown in 1857. William and his brothers were each mercantiles
with businesses on Richmond Street. The house was purchased
by Arthur W. Weeks just before the turn of the 20th century
and was, at that time, converted into a double residence.
It remained in the family’s possession until it was
purchased in 1998 by the Bevan family at which time it was
converted into the 14 units that you see today. Extensive
renovations were undertaken, keeping in mind the historical
significance of the original house while bringing it up to
the national building code standards of today. The hardwood
floors and two of the mantles are original to the house as
is the staircase leading up to the second floor at the front
of the house. The house today offers modern conveniences
for the guests but surrounds them with all the warmth and
charm of an 1850’s home.
